What is a credit bureau?

There are three (3) major credit reporting agencies, sometimes called credit bureaus, in the US. These agencies include Experian, Equifax and Transunion and each of these agencies have similar business models. Credit reporting agencies earn money by monitoring an individuals credit activity and selling that information to lenders, realtors or employers. These agencies (companies) also earn money by selling that information to solicitors who use the information to send offers (mail, telemarketers) to consumers.

These companies also offer a monthly fee based service in which you can monitor your credit histoy simply by logging in to your account. Information included in your account credit report are:

  • A history of your credit activity.
  • Length of credit
  • Types of credit
  • New credit

  • Lenders, realtors and even employers use your credit report to determine your ability and willingness to pay so keeping your credit report accurate is imperative.
  • Notification of new inquiries. You will be able to see who has requested to see your credit profile.
  • Inaccurate listings. You will be able to challenge entries to your credit report that are mistakes or inaccurate.
  • Old or out of date. A credit listing remains on your report for seven (7) years but not all reporting agencies are vigil. You can request that these be removed.

All three of the leading credit reporting agencies, Experian, Equifax and Transunion, offer similar services. Of these companies only Equifax offers a credit score known as FICO. FICO is the only score used by lenders to determine your credit worthiness. The score used by the other companies are created in house and have no bearing on your credit.

  • Equifax offers your report from all 3 credit reporting agencies plus your credit score but no cost is given until you sign up with a valid credit card. This is a flag.
